Food and accommodations

There are a lot of different opinions about how to feed a skunk. Never follow the advice of the Pet Shop owner, nor the Breeder, if they recommend to feed it dog food or cat food, and some fruit, as they usually do. They will tell you that it is very easy to feed a skunk just like a dog or cat. DO NOT follow such advice.

You have to feed your skunk a vast variety of fresh vegetables. The rest should be meat, fish, bread, cooked rice, potato or pasta; and small amounts of yogurt or cottage cheese. You also can give some nuts or a piece of biscuit. DO NOT give them junk food like potato chips or candy. There are certain foods they absolutely cannot eat like Pork and Chocolate. Skunks have a very sensitive digestive system.

The meat can be, chicken, turkey or beef.

Skunks also do like a few crickets, grasshoppers or mealworms, if you should have any such things available!

A skunk needs a little place where he can sleep and this place has to be somewhere where it is quiet and where he will feel safe. For example, under a large chair or in a cupboard. He sleeps mostly in the daytime when his owner is at work. You can put him in a large cage when you are away and give him his freedom like you would your cat or dog as soon as you return. He will need a blanket to sleep on or under, and a litter box.

It is very important to make your house skunk proof! Your skunk is curious and loves to explore. He will find his way through any opening that his head can fit through. He can become lost because he will not be able to find the way back home. Let the vet insert a microchip into your skunk so when someone finds your skunk a vet or special agency can read this chip and you, the owner, can be traced.
